Referral Information

Referral Pathways

We accept referrals for:

  • Orthopaedic surgery
  • Physiatry (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation)
  • Sports medicine
  • Non-operative musculoskeletal medicine
  • Paediatric MSK assessment
  • Complex, multi-system MSK cases

X-Ray Requirements

All musculoskeletal referrals, with the exception of foot and ankle cases, must include a current x-ray report dated within six months. Details on preferred imaging can be found in our x-ray views guide.

Foot & Ankle Referrals

For foot and ankle consultations, our team will arrange updated imaging before the patient’s appointment. Most patients will undergo weight-bearing x-rays with five standard views of the affected foot and ankle. In certain cases, imaging of both sides may be required. This process ensures our specialists have the most accurate information to guide assessment and treatment.

Urgent Referrals

Urgent orthopaedic surgery referrals should be directed to the on-call surgeon or clinician through the hospital switchboard. All other urgent referrals should be communicated directly by telephone to the physician involved.

First Available Appropriate Specialist Triage (FAAST)

Referrers can either:

  • Directly refer to a specific physician or surgeon, or
  • Refer to the FAAST model, where referrals go through central intake, are triaged by an MSK clinician, and assigned to the first available appropriate specialist

FAAST supports timely access to care and ensures patients are matched based on diagnosis, severity, and prior treatments. If wait times for a specific physician are expected to exceed 5 months, referrers will be notified and given the option for earlier assessment through FAAST.
